Well,the phrase really was tongue in cheek, as they say, because I cannot be a total failure, as you pointed out, there are no goal-posts for that, but I do not mind celebrating what I have lost! And I have lost a great deal: I once thought that the rest of the world would know and understand me and embrace my ideas, my ideals of peace, truth, and justice....I failed.
I might add that I have also been a lousy Shakespeare scholar; "Hamlet" is on TCM right now, with Laurence Olivier,and perhaps I have not failed that much after all...I am no melancholly prince of the Danes, but perhaps I thought that I should be what I am not to be....get thee to a nunnery indeed! Not me!

You replaced one thought with another. Loss? Yes, of course, every thought of ours gets replaced by the next one, better get use to it! Failure? Every thought of ours gets replaced by the next one, better get use to it - that is what human brain DOES... I know it might very tough and harsh for you but believe me, you cannot escape your own brain, you have it for a reason! And saying that it is a failure that your brain works the way it should it a total nonsense.

What do human beings do when under threat they cannot defend themselves against?
They huddle together, looking for their saviour, and crying "please, please save us, we will do anything You ask, but lead us out of this danger!"
In old days Wars were the most common way to create such threats. If You were da Rruler of the country and wanted to control your people, the most effective way to go about it was to create a War, internal or external threat which would not only unite all the warring fractions in your country, but in addition would give You unlimited powers - for, during the War Time, anybody who is against is a traitor and therefore can be shot on the spot.

Times have changed, all out wars are no longer economically practical due to global companies that rule the World such as McDonalds having high stakes on both sides of any potential conflict hehehehe....

And Big Brother Political Correctness prohibits Governments finding internal enemies by picking on some distinct group of people, be it Jews, Arabs, Women or Gays.

But common enemy must be found. The fear must be instilled into masses for without fear, without common enemy, common threat, anarchy is bound to arise. Not violent, warring, French Revolution Anarchy mind You, but much worse, more dangerous type of anarchy: anarchy born out of safety, freedom and comfort, anarchy that gives people ideas, encourages them to think anything they like, allows them to live their own lives, create their own worlds, creating their own perceptions of it, and by doing so, allows them to move further and further away from control of Government, become apathetically anti-patriotic and seeking self-fulfilment instead.

Anarchy of freedom and democracy which sooner or later would escalate to the point where what Government thinks and does is no longer compatible with the activities and perceptions of the masses, where Government no longer serves its people and its people no longer serve its Government.

This cannot be allowed to happen for it would mean Death, Annihilation, Apocalypse of Government. And Government represents its people after all, and must protect itself at ANY price in order to be able to protect its people. But in order to do that, some kind of threat is required. And so it goes…. around and around…
